Zay reflects on IDOH's third-quarter abortion report

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) —The Indiana Department of Health's (IDOH) Division of Vital Records recently released the Terminated Pregnancy Report for the third quarter (July 1 – Sept. 30) of 2023, which showed major advancements Indiana has made toward protecting life at all stages, said State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington).

During the 2022 special legislative session, the General Assembly passed Senate Enrolled Act 1, which terminates the licensure of abortion clinics and bans most abortions in Indiana. This bill recently went into effect in early August. Since then, according to the IDOH's report, the number of reported abortions decreased drastically, showing 698 terminations reported in July, 52 reported in August and 14 reported in September. The full report can be found by clicking here.

"I am extremely pleased with the results in this report, especially because these are some of the lowest numbers we've seen in years," Zay said. "I strongly believe that all life should be protected from the point of conception and the data in this report shows that we are heading in the right direction, but there is still work to be done to recognize the dignity of life at all stages."

Zay has continued to push for legislation that aims to protect unborn babies in Indiana. In 2022, Zay fought for and supported SEA 1 until it was passed by the General Assembly, and for the upcoming 2024 legislative session, Zay has authored Senate Bill 98, which provides that an unborn baby is considered a dependent child, allowing the parent(s) to claim income tax exemptions.

As a lawmaker in Indiana, Zay is committed to serving and protecting all Hoosiers, even those who are unborn, and he will continue to do so heading into the 2024 legislative session.

Constituents with questions, comments or concerns about this issue or any others are encouraged to contact Zay by email at Senator.Zay@iga.in.gov or by phone at 317-234-9441.
