Zay authors bill to make the breaded pork tenderloin the official state sandwich

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 10, 2023) – Senate Bill 322 authored by State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington), would make the breaded pork tenderloin the official state sandwich.

Located in downtown Huntington, Nick's Kitchen is home to the first Hoosier breaded pork tenderloin. Founded by Nick Freienstein, Nick's Kitchen has been serving customers the famous breaded pork tenderloin since 1908.

"Having the home of the breaded pork tenderloin located in Senate District 17, it was an obvious decision to author a bill to make it the official state sandwich," Zay said.

Former owner, Jean Anne Bailey, is pleased to have Nick's Kitchen as the motivation of this bill.

"It's quite an honor," Bailey said. "Indiana has enjoyed the breaded pork tenderloin for more than 100 years because of Nick's hard work. He used to push around a cart and serve the residents of Huntington before officially opening an establishment. I am pleased to have the representation from Sen. Zay on this bill and hope to see it pass the General Assembly."

"I was born and raised in Huntington, and Nick's Kitchen has been a staple in our community," Zay said. "I am looking forward to getting this bill to the finish line."
