Winter Weather Safety Tips

Friday, January 16, 2015

January has arrived and with it, freezing temperatures. As temperatures drop, risks affecting people on and off the roads increase. A few simple health and safety precautions should be taken as winter progresses.

As you prepare your home and family for this winter, it is important to remember what type of heating devices should be used indoors. Do not bring any heating device that uses propane or charcoal inside your home. Also, do not use natural gas or wood burning outdoor fire places because these items can produce deadly carbon monoxide.

When getting ready to drive on the roads, there are several things to remember:

  • Never warm up a car in an enclosed area – always open the garage door before starting any vehicle;
  • Keep the gas tank at least half full at all times;
  • Ensure that your tires are properly inflated;
  • Pack a cellphone charger, blankets, gloves, hats, food, water and any necessary medication in your vehicle in case of an emergency;
  • Always wear your seatbelt;
  • Take time on the roads and anticipate traffic to allow plenty of time for your commute; and
  • If possible, stay home in bad weather.

Remember to think about your furry family members at this time as well. An easy standard to abide by is: if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for them. Do not leave your pets outside. If you find a stray animal on the street or can no longer care for your own, visit your local humane society.

Please stay warm and alert this winter by following these tips to ensure a healthy winter season in Indiana.
