Winter is Coming

Thursday, November 30, 2017

As temperatures begin to dip below freezing, it is important for Hoosiers to take the appropriate steps to prepare for several months of cold weather.

When winter storms or extreme cold come about, we need to make changes in our everyday life in order to stay safe. Cold weather puts extra strain on the heart as the body tries to keep warm. Anyone performing hard work in the cold should take breaks regularly, since the body is already working hard just to stay warm, it is possible to be overheated as well.

Try to stay indoors when weather is extremely cold, especially if there are high winds. If you must go outdoors, make trips outside as brief as possible and wear proper gear like a hat, scarf, gloves, thermal wear, water-resistant or tightly woven coat, and two layers of socks with boots or shoes that are waterproof.

Without adequate protection, you will run the risk of frostbite, which is the freezing of the skin that can result in loss of feeling and possible amputation, or hypothermia, a condition where the human body is at a dangerously low temperature that affects the brain.

In case of winter storms, be prepared and have a plan with an emergency supply kit. Heavy storms can create power outages, so it is important to have non-perishable food and water, a flashlight, first-aid kit, extra clothing and shoes, list of emergency phone numbers, important documents, and small-bill cash.

Finally, in order to ensure safety on the road this winter, there are steps to prepare your vehicle as well. Be sure to check for appropriate tire pressure and tread depth, battery status, crack-free hoses and belts, enough oil, working windshield wipers and blades, and try to keep at least a half tank of gas in your car to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
