Who would have thought a hoagie could bring so much excitement to Daleville? When I first heard the convenience chain Wawa was coming to town, I was pleased to know we would benefit from a new business, but I wasn't expecting such a huge community turnout – and certainly wasn't prepared to be a sandwich artist for the day.
During the VIP reception and official grand opening of Indiana's first Wawa, I had the great honor of making the first Wawa hoagie in the state – their specialty. I opted for roast beef with all the fixings – I'm sure we will all have our own favorites soon.
As some know, Wawa has a very large and dedicated following, with over 1,000 locations across the U.S. The franchise is known for its built-to-order custom-made sandwiches and other fresh foods. The store plans to open 60 other stores in Indiana – which amounts to about $450 million invested in our state – and will create over 2,000 new jobs. The Daleville store alone is a $7.5 million investment in our community.
Wawa is a family-owned business that has been in operation for over 200 years. They offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies, fresh coffee, the “Sizzli” − a hot breakfast sandwich, dinner items including burgers and fries, soups, snacks, and hot, iced and frozen specialty beverages. Wawa also carries more than 6,000 items including many grocery items and candy.
Across Indiana, Wawa will be opening stores in Clark, Dearborn, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Scott, Tippecanoe and Wayne counties. However, it is truly special that, here in Delaware County, Daleville was selected to be the first of these sites to open. I am proud to represent the area and to get to experience firsthand what a great investment this will be for our community.
The new Wawa will be a valuable community partner and keep gas prices in check while providing quality services and job opportunities to locals and those who visit the area. I sincerely look forward to our flagship Indiana store paving the way for this huge investment Wawa is bringing to our state.
