Tomes' bill providing protections for shooting ranges ceremonially signed into law

STATEHOUSE (April 30, 2026) — A bill authored by State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) that provides protections for shooting ranges was ceremonially signed into law April 29 by Gov. Mike Braun.

Senate Enrolled Act 176 prohibits a county, city or town from creating stricter local rules for shooting ranges than what state law already requires.

Shooting ranges are important places that teach gun safety, provide opportunities for recreational activities and provide a space for gun owners to practice and train for competition shooting. Ranges also can help train and certify law enforcement and allow for teachers and staff to be certified if they choose.

"Local governments sometimes try and put forth stricter ordinances and regulations in order to get shooting ranges shut down, so I authored SEA 176 to ensure these ranges, indoor and outdoor, are protected," Tomes said. "Shooting ranges are valuable to our communities, and I am happy to see this bill ceremonially signed into law."
