Thank a Hoosier Veteran

Thank a Hoosier Veteran

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

There are nearly 500,000 military veterans in Indiana – all of whom have made great sacrifices for our country. Of those, approximately 28,000 served in World War II. Honor Flight Network is dedicated to honoring these veterans, and now, there’s a way you can get involved with their mission.

On May 10, Indy Honor Flight will transport 70 WWII veterans from Indianapolis International Airport to Washington, D.C. at absolutely no cost to participants. These veterans will be able to visit and reflect at memorials honoring their sacrifices, which may not have otherwise been financially or physically possible for them. Click here to read about one local veteran’s Honor Flight experience.

To further show our country’s appreciation, Indy Honor Flight coordinators are hosting a letter-writing campaign for every veteran participating in the trip. Their goal is to ensure that each veteran will receive at least 10 letters thanking them for their service. Past mail calls have included store-bought cards, handwritten letters and even pictures drawn by children.

Please consider writing a letter for these Hoosier heroes, expressing your appreciation for their military service. Letters and cards must be submitted before May 2, 2014.

The salutation on your letters should be “Dear Veteran” and should not be dated. Please send all mail call items to:

Event coordinators are also seeking volunteers to greet Indy Honor Flight veterans when they land at Indianapolis International Airport on May 10 at 8:30 p.m. Volunteers are asked to gather together in the food court area of the airport, carrying American flags, “Welcome Home” signs and patriotic banners. This will give these veterans the grand homecoming that many never received.

The Indiana Senate Majority Caucus encourages you to be a part of this great cause. This is just a small way we can show our appreciation for the immense sacrifices these veterans have made for our country.
