Summer is almost here, and there’s no better time to enjoy the sun and sights of Indiana. If you’re looking for fun and frugal activities for your family, check out these “staycation” ideas.
Get Back to Nature: Sometimes, the best way to relax is to unplug from a busy life and enjoy Indiana’s beautiful forests and waterways. Our state features many parks and campgrounds like Brown County, White River and Harmonie state parks. Spend a weekend camping with some friends, enjoy the Indiana Dunes beaches or take a canoe down one of Indiana’s rivers. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the summer weather and get away from it all.
Learn about Indiana History: Indiana is home to some great museums and historic sites. No matter what area you are visiting, there is always something interesting to learn about the Hoosier State. Visit Lincoln’s Boyhood Home in Lincoln City, or tour military landmarks in Vincennes and Evansville. See history come to life at Conner Prairie in Fishers, or watch Indiana government in action at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. These are just a few of the countless historic places our state has to offer.
Down on the Farm: The Hoosier State is proud of its agriculture industry, and there are many ways you can experience it. The Indiana State Fair runs from Aug. 1-17, celebrating our rich history of farming and horticulture. Fair Oaks Farms in Fair Oaks and Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville feature tours that give visitors a hands-on look at this important part of our state’s economy and traditions. And don’t forget to support these farmers by visiting your community’s farmers market. This is a great way for your family to find fresh food and shop local.
Experience the Arts: Support the state’s arts community this summer by visiting Indiana’s many museums, festivals, concert halls and theatres. The annual Marsh Symphony on the Prairie at Conner Prairie highlights many genres and generations of music, including classical, rock, folk and jazz. The Northeast Indiana Playwright Festival, Indianapolis Theatre Fringe Festival and civic theatres from South Bend to Evansville offer a unique look at the performing arts in our state. You can also enjoy year-round events at the Indianapolis Museum of Art that celebrate Indiana’s visual arts. Art lovers will always find something new to experience in the Hoosier State.
