Statement from State Sen. Spencer Deery

State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) made the following statement today in regard to Gov. Holcomb signing Senate Enrolled Act 202 into law:

STATEHOUSE (March 13, 2024) "Indiana just sent a strong signal that our state is committed to academic freedom, free expression and intellectual diversity for all students and faculty. Universities that fail to foster intellectually diverse communities that challenge both teachers and learners fail to reach their potential. This measured bill makes it significantly less likely that any university will shortchange our students in that way.

"While some Indiana public universities are already working on creating truly diverse communities, this law makes it an expectation across the state, and it does so without mandating or prohibiting any content and with no interruption to the important ongoing efforts to recruit and retain minority students in higher education.

"This bill pushes our universities to improve with minimal disruption to how they already operate, and I am grateful to the governor and my colleagues for helping me to make it state law.”
