Statement from State Sen. Linda Rogers

State Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger) made the following statement today in response to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s 2024 State of the State address:

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) – "I am pleased the governor discussed several education and workforce issues that need to be addressed by the General Assembly this session.

"I am authoring legislation that would help Hoosier children improve their reading skills. Reading contributes not only to the success of a student's education, but also their future career. We should ensure that our children are properly developing these skills that will continue to be crucial later in life.

"I also believe K-12 students should be exposed to other post-secondary education options like trade schools. I authored Senate Bill 154 to ensure that students are provided with transportation to apprenticeship programs, career and technical education programs, modern youth apprenticeships and work-based learning courses. These introduce students to new life skills and careers they can consider, and they can boost our future workforce.

"Finally, I authored Senate Bill 34, which would require the Professional Licensing Agency to study occupational licensing laws enacted by other states and to contact representatives of each of the occupations regulated by them for certain recommendations. Occupational licensing offers Indiana the opportunity to further bolster our workforce, but we need more research before we can act on this further. SB 34 would allow us to consider options for our state based on what other states have already implemented.

"I look forward to discussing these and other topics this session and working with my fellow legislators to ensure that Indiana is a state people are drawn to for our quality of life and many opportunities."
