STATEHOUSE (March 14, 2019) — “Recently, some concerns have been brought to my attention regarding a potential change in the level of school funding because new data suggests poverty levels in some districts are declining.

“Since Indiana provides more funding for school districts with higher poverty levels, those schools could see a drop in funding based on the current version of our state budget bill.

“The current budget proposal is not final, and my colleagues and I will continue to work on this and carefully consider how to respond to this issue as we adjust school funding levels in the budget.

“The underlying issue – that fewer students are receiving public assistance because of Indiana’s healthy economy – is good news.

“Making sure we distribute funding to our schools fairly is one of my top priorities, and I will continue to monitor this issue moving forward.”
