Statement from State Sen. Gary Byrne

State Sen. Gary Byrne (R-Byrneville) made the following statement following the conclusion of the 2024 legislative session:

STATEHOUSE (March 8, 2024) – "I am proud of the work we were able to accomplish this year, especially the progress made on protecting our communities, improving our state colleges and supporting public retirees.

"To better protect our communities, I was proud to support Senate Enrolled Act 181 and House Enrolled Act 1183. These bills would allow the attorney general to enforce current immigration law by banning sanctuary cities and prevent individuals from adversarial states from obtaining our farmland or land around military bases. In passing this legislation, our state can better ensure our military posts, economic foundation and food supply chains are kept secure.

"College students should also feel secure attending our public universities and sharing their research and opinions. This is why, I supported legislation that would encourage diversity of thought at our state colleges by creating protections for tenured faculty against retaliation for their research and requiring Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offices to include intellectual diversity in their missions.

"The General Assembly also took a strong stand against antisemitism through our passage of House Enrolled Act 1002.

"Lastly, our public retirees should know that Indiana will continue to support them when they have dedicated years to serving our great state. House Enrolled Act 1004 would help ensure this and financially return the favor by offering public retirees who do not receive a cost-of-living adjustment a 13th check beginning in 2025.

"These and other initiatives I supported this legislative session are setting up our state for a bright future. It has been an honor to represent Senate District 47, and to look forward to continue my work with our local communities to make them better places to live, work and raise a family."
