Statement from State Sen. Ed Charbonneau

State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) made the following statement today in response to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s 2024 State of the State address:

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) – "I am pleased to see Gov. Eric Holcomb will continue to prioritize healthy, well-rounded communities during his final year as governor. I am particularly pleased to see him focusing on education and child care.

"Hoosier children are in dire need of a proper approach to build their reading skills. Studies have shown that poor reading skills are often associated with poor success later in life, including higher dropout rates, lower incomes and worse health. This year, I will strongly support legislation that would ensure our children receive the support they need to grow their reading skills.

"I am also working on legislation that would address a significant infrastructure issue by improving child care access and affordability. This is a growing problem and I hope we can work to help child care providers find workers and reduce regulations. I look forward to further discussing this topic with my fellow lawmakers this session.

"I am also planning to help local communities this session. A fellow lawmaker is carrying a bill that would establish guardrails to protect Indiana communities from the potential harms of large water transfers. As an avid proponent of ensuring all Hoosier communities have access to clean water, I plan to support this bill as it moves through the legislative process.

"I look forward to addressing these and other issues with my fellow legislators this session and will strive to improve the lives of Hoosiers of all ages."
