State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) made the following statement regarding recent politically motivated violence throughout the country:
STATEHOUSE (Sept. 11, 2025) – "Nearly a quarter century ago, our nation experienced a terrorist attack committed through pure evil and hate.
"Immediately after the attacks, our nation banded together to honor the victims of that fateful day and stood united as Americans.
"In recent years, our nation has experienced a number of politically motivated violent actions including this week's assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk and the June shooting of former Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband.
"We've also witnessed school shootings at Evergreen High School in Colorado and Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
"As Americans, we can and should honor our moral compass while allowing debate about our differences of opinion like late Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who remained close friends throughout their lives despite their political differences.
"In the weeks and months ahead, my hope is that we can pause and reflect on our differences and find ways to have open and honest debates while remembering that we are all Americans."
