Statement from State Sen. Dan Dernulc

State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) made the following statement regarding the conclusion of the 2024 legislative session:

STATEHOUSE (March 8, 2024) – "As my colleagues and I conclude the 2024 legislative session, I reflect on the positive things we have done this year, the things that we have the opportunity to improve in coming sessions and the personal goals I set for myself.

"This session I was proud to champion my first bill, Senate Enrolled Act 19. This bill would allow the compliance period to be extended for an additional 90 days for Hoosiers who did not provide a proof of insurance upon the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles' request following an accident. There is still work to do on this issue, but I believe it is a step in the right direction to help Hoosiers throughout the state.

"I also offered legislation to financially support children who have lost a parent to an auto accident in which the offender is convicted of driving while under the influence, and a bill to better protect child therapists, counselors and other professionals whose license falls under the Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board in the event they break a code of conduct to protect a child. Even though these issues did not make it through the legislative process this year, I will continue to try to find solutions to help the Hoosiers affected by these situations.

"During the next legislative session, a budget session, I hope to work on increasing the compensation for both police officers and teachers throughout Indiana. I also hope to find additional funding for the local police training academy in northern Indiana. These are important things we should be looking to increase in our budget next year.

"This legislative session I hit the ground running with a better understanding of the legislative process, familiarity with the building and better relationships with my fellow legislators. I look forward to continuing my work on behalf of constituents over the interim, adding to my knowledge on the issues and processes, and building upon those important relationships I have made with my colleagues."
