Statement from State Sen. Dan Dernulc

State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) made the following statement today in response to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s 2024 State of the State address:

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) – "Tonight Gov. Holcomb spoke well of the accomplishments our state has achieved and the goals many Hoosiers share for the future of our state. As a member of the Senate committees on Local Government and Education and Career Development, I was pleased to hear the governor talk about his education and career development goals and the achievements of local governments.

"In that same vein, I have offered legislation to protect Hoosiers and support local governments.

"Senate Bill 12 would add Homeowners Associations to the restricted areas in which sex offenders could not reside, which would better protect young Hoosiers.

"Senate Bill 13 would require those convicted of driving under the influence and who, in tandem, cause the death of a parent to pay the child restitution, helping the child after a horrible tragedy.

"Senate Bill 19 would require the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to send a request for proof of insurance to the most recent insurance carrier listed for the registration of the vehicle involved in an accident. This puts more of the burden for proof of insurance on the BMV than the driver, expediting the process of gathering the necessary information and mitigating the unnecessary license suspension for those who don't comply with the request for proof of insurance but who are in fact covered.

"Senate Bill 101 would give the City of Hammond the option to repurpose the Gavit High School building to benefit the local community in another way, negating the barrier of the $1 law in only this instance.

"Senate Bill 102 would grant immunity to child therapists, counselors and other professionals whose license falls under the behavioral health and human services licensing board in the event they break a code of conduct to protect a child.

"I look forward to working on these and many other issues as we continue to the work to keep Indiana a great place to live, work and raise a family."
