Statement from State Sen. Blake Doriot

State Sen. Blake Doriot (R-Goshen) made the following statement regarding the conclusion of the 2024 legislative session:

STATEHOUSE (March 8, 2024) – "This session, I am pleased we passed several Senate Republican priority bills. We also passed several bills I authored and supported, which focus on education, land ownership and animal care.

"Transparency in education, especially post-secondary education, is very important. Senate Enrolled Act 48 would require state colleges and universities to prominently display a hyperlink to the institution's profile on the U.S. Department of Education's college scorecard, as well as the scorecards for each associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree offered by the institution.

"In addition, land ownership is one of Indiana's greatest strengths in our agriculture industry. In order to ensure that Hoosier farmland continues to be protected, I supported House Enrolled Act 1183, which would protect Indiana land by preventing individuals, with some exceptions, from foreign adversarial countries, as defined by the U.S. Department of Commerce, from obtaining farmland and land within a 10-mile radius of a military base in Indiana.

"House Enrolled Act 1412, which I sponsored, would allow more dogs to see the possibility of finding their forever home. Local governments have been restricting the flow of commerce, which is under state purview. HEA 1412 would help protect commerce by restricting and overturning ordinances banning the retail sale of dogs while also raising the standards for breeders allowed to sell dogs in pet stores. As a dog owner myself, I want the best for every dog owner and their companion animal.

"In addition to the bills I have authored and sponsored this session, I presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 10, which honors the life of Owen Abbott, who tragically passed away in a bus accident in 2018, by renaming the railroad overpass over State Road 31 in Marshall County as the 'Owen Abbott Memorial Bridge.' This resolution, in addition to commemorating Owen, also serves as a reminder of the dangers rail road crossings present to school buses.

"The legislation passed by the General Assembly this session will ultimately help all kinds of Hoosiers. I'm grateful for my colleagues and the work they have done with me on this legislation. I will continue to work hard in the interim and future sessions to better serve Hoosiers in Senate District 12."
