Statement from State Sen. Andy Zay
State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) made the following statement regarding the conclusion of the 2024 legislative session:

STATEHOUSE (March 8, 2024) – "I am glad to see legislation that would improve Hoosiers' health, keep our communities safe, and protect our state from foreign threats move to the governor's desk for final consideration.

"Senate Enrolled Act 5, which I co-authored, would enable utility companies with IURC-approved lead line service replacement plans to replace lead pipes quickly and in a more cost effective way. Lead water lines are known to cause severe health problems and Indiana has more than 265,000 still in use, which is why SEA 5 was one of Senate Republican's priority bills this session.

"Public safety is extremely important, especially in regard to the crisis at the southern border. Hoosiers should never have to fear the threat of an unprotected and uncontrolled border, including extremely high crime rates and deadly drugs crossing the border, in their communities. This is why I co-authored Senate Enrolled Act 181, which would ensure that Indiana's existing ban on sanctuary cities is strictly enforced.

"It is also important to protect our military bases and economy from foreign threats, which is why I supported House Enrolled Act 1183. This would prevent individuals from countries the U.S. Department of Commerce defines as adversarial states from obtaining farmland and land within a 10-mile radius of a military base in Indiana. Without these safeguards on land purchases, our state could face a huge homeland security risk.

"The legislation passed this session is critical to keeping Hoosiers healthy and safe, and our economy strong. I look forward to continuing my work in addressing these issues and others so that Indiana is an even better place to live, work and raise a family."
