Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Working to limit congressional terms

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

Throughout my time in public service, I have always enjoyed talking to my neighbors about their concerns.

One benefit of serving in the Indiana State Senate is that the General Assembly is a part-time legislature, meaning we only meet for a few months out of the year. The rest of the year we are in our districts listening to constituents, working and raising our families.

While the Indiana General Assembly works diligently passing its budget every two years, the United States Congress has struggled in recent years to pass funding measures for the federal government.

Congress has been broken for many years, and no one individual or party is necessarily to blame.

This year, I supported a resolution advocating for congressional term limits, which I believe is one tool that could help fix Congress and make sure it's working for Americans.

Senate Joint Resolution 21 makes an application to Congress calling for an Article V Convention to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

For far too long, many members of Congress have gone to Washington and become career politicians and often get out of touch with the people they represent.

Adding term limits for Congress would limit someone's ability to become a career politician and ensure Washington has new voices that represent the American people. That's why I was proud to support Senate Joint Resolution 21 this year.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
