Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Thanking our veterans and active-duty military

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

As a proud American citizen, I am always grateful for our military veterans and active-duty personnel who have protected my family, friends and neighbors.

Hoosiers have always been patriotic, and it's important to us to show our appreciation to our veterans. That's why our state offers many incentives and resources to veterans, those currently serving and their families as a way to thank them for their service.

In 2023, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law that exempts all income earned from active duty or reserve military service from paying state income taxes. Disabled veterans are also eligible for property tax deductions.

Indiana also offers in-state tuition to any honorably discharged veteran, their spouse and dependents who enroll in a public college within one year of their discharge from military service. Other higher education benefits include free college and career training for Indiana National Guard members, free college for spouses and children of Indiana National Guard members who suffered a service-connected death, free college for Purple Heart recipients and their children, and free re-enrollment or refund for military deployment.

The General Assembly also recently passed a law that created the Green Alert Program for missing or at-risk veterans, which requires a public notification to be sent out to Hoosiers with information regarding missing and at-risk veterans.

Finally, here in Indiana, each county has a veterans service officer who acts as a point of contact to help local veterans navigate any issues they may have connecting with federal and state resources they are owed due to their service.
