Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Rooting out waste, fraud and abuse in government

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

I just read in the news that a recent poll shows 88% of Americans are very concerned about corruption and waste in government. During my first two years as your State Senator, I have worked diligently to root out waste, fraud and abuse, and I will continue those efforts. One of my most important jobs is to ensure your hard-earned tax dollars are not wasted, and I take that responsibility very seriously.

Yesterday, Vice President JD Vance announced a new initiative to help root out waste, fraud, and abuse in government with a “Pledge to Protect Americans from Fraud.” I am proud to announce I joined some of my Senate colleagues in signing that pledge, and I hope others will as well.

As I mentioned in a recent Spotlight, I supported legislation during the 2026 session of the General Assembly – Senate Enrolled Act 1 – that prohibits anyone who cannot verify they are legally residing in the United States from receiving state government assistance. This legislation also addresses how Indiana’s SNAP benefits can be used, so Hoosiers who are truly in need are able to provide nutritional food for their families.

You work hard to earn every penny of your income. Your tax dollars should be spent only on those who are truly deserving of assistance, and I will continue to work with my legislative colleagues to make sure state government is a good steward of those tax dollars. I give you my word.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
