Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Reaching halftime in the Indiana General Assembly

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

The Indiana General Assembly has reached the halfway point of this year's legislative session, which means bills must have passed out of their original chamber in order to continue through the legislative process.

In the Senate, 290 bills were filed this year, and 112 were passed by the chamber. More than 90% of these bills passed with bipartisan support and nearly half were unanimous. This includes bills I authored that would ensure Hoosiers are voting where they live and require election materials to be maintained by county election offices for five years.

The Senate will now start debating the 112 bills sent over from the House of Representatives, including a bill I am sponsoring that would boost our state's economy by incentivizing public contractors to use Indiana business resources.

Any bill that is amended in the second chamber must return to its original chamber for further review. Once a bill has passed both chambers with the exact same language, it heads to the governor's desk for his consideration.

Senate Enrolled Act 212, which would conform many of Indiana's tax codes with President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill, has already passed both chambers and has been signed by the governor.
