Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Maintaining Indiana's Secure Elections

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

As Indiana's primary election approaches, it's important for Hoosiers to know that our elections are safe and secure.

I believe one of my top priorities as a state senator is to ensure our state's elections are secure, transparent and voters understand the process, and in recent years the General Assembly has worked hard to make our elections even more secure.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Elections, I debated several election-related bills with my colleagues this past session.

This year, I supported Senate Enrolled Act 12, a new law that prohibits the use of ranked choice voting in any state or local election. That's because ranked choice voting undermines voter confidence due to its confusing procedures and potential disenfranchisement if the ballot is not filled out correctly.

I also authored two new election laws this year that increase the amount of time election material must be maintained by county offices, and help ensure Hoosiers are voting where they live while removing a step a former candidate needs to take if they move.

Hoosiers are reminded that this year's primary election will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. Many counties, however, are already allowing early voting to take place.

To check your voting times, locations and who is on your ballot you can visit IndianaVoters.com.

Voters are reminded to have a government-issued photo ID, like a driver's license or passport, when you cast your ballot.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
