By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)
Times are tough for many Hoosiers, and one way we can help at the state level is to reduce the amount of taxes the state raises from your hard-earned income.
Senate Republicans began working several years ago to address Indiana’s tax structure in an effort to find efficiencies and areas where we could cut taxes. One of the first taxes we cut is the state’s income tax. By next year our flat rate state income tax will be 2.9% — one of the lowest in the nation. During the first five years under the new tax rate, Hoosiers will collectively save approximately $2 billion.
In addition, we exempted military income for members of the armed forces and the National Guard and aligned our state with federal policy and exempted taxes on tips and overtime for 2026.
I know this won’t solve every problem Hoosiers are facing, but it is important to note that, not only will we have one of the lowest income tax rates in the country, but we also have one of the lowest costs of living and the lowest gas prices thanks to the suspension of the gas tax.
Every day I strive to focus on ways I can make life better not just for those I represent, but for all Hoosiers. I will continue to support policies that reduce the size and cost of government so taxes are low and you can keep more of what you earn.
If I can be of any assistance to you, please reach out to my Statehouse office at 317-232-9400.
