Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Improving high school equivalency offerings

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

I believe all Hoosiers should have a chance at success.

For some, success means graduating from college, while others consider learning a trade as a success.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development, I've discussed several bills during my time in the Senate aimed at ensuring Hoosier students and adults get the education they need for the career path they want to pursue for a successful future.

That's why I supported House Enrolled Act 1195 this year, which will improve our state's high school equivalency offerings.

While I believe a high school diploma is an important step toward someone's career goals – for some Hoosiers, obtaining it may be difficult due to their circumstances in life.

This new law, which passed the General Assembly unanimously, requires students entering a high school equivalency program to take a placement and career aptitude test so that the instruction can be targeted to their skill level and career goals.

The law also extends a pilot program that is geared toward high school seniors who are not on track to graduate on time.

It's important for all Hoosiers to be ready for their futures, and I believe House Enrolled Act 1195 will ensure more students can have successful careers.

As always, constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
