Statehouse Spotlight with Sen. Schmitt: Happy Thanksgiving

By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)

In times like this, it's easy to watch the news or scroll through social media and worry about the future of our great country.

With this year's Thanksgiving holiday approaching, I am reminded of the story of the first Thanksgiving when Pilgrim settlers and Native Americans came together as friends, not enemies, for a feast.

As the story goes, the Pilgrims invited the Native Americans to their feast to thank them for helping throughout the growing and harvest seasons.

More than 400 years after that first Thanksgiving feast, I think we can all learn a lesson from the story of our ancestors that day who looked past each other's differences and came together as one group of people.

Here in Indiana, we have a lot to be thankful for, and I am grateful to both those who support me and those who disagree with my stances on important topics during a legislative session. You all help make me a better legislator, and for that I thank you all.

While the holiday is a time to give thanks for those in our lives, Thanksgiving is also a time to celebrate the end of the harvest season. As a fifth generation Hoosier farmer, I know some years are better than others, and I'd like to thank all who work in the agriculture industry that put food on our plates.

This year, I look forward to spending time with my family, eating lots of great food and preparing for the Christmas season.

From my family to yours, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.
