By State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper)
It has been nearly 250 years since members of the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, creating what is now the most powerful nation in the world.
In the centuries since, our nation has experienced many triumphs and tribulations as we work to create, as the United States Constitution urged, "a more perfect Union."
While it's easy to watch the news and believe our nation is more divided than it's ever been, I see everyday Americans working together to support our family, friends and neighbors.
I truly believe there is always more that unites than divides us, and Americans must find ways to look past our differences and unite behind our common ideals.
This week, as we celebrate Independence Day at barbecues, parades and firework shows, let us not forget those who sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we cherish.
Our veterans, and those currently serving, have put themselves in harm's way to protect their fellow Americans — and for that I am always grateful.
Their sacrifice has protected our freedoms since the early days of our nation, and I will always keep our Armed Forces, and their loved ones, in my prayers.
As our nation's 250th birthday approaches in 2026, I look forward to meeting with constituents and celebrating our great nation.
From my family to yours, I wish you a happy Independence Day.
