State Sen. Ed Charbonneau to Serve as Chairman of Health and Human Services Study Committee

STATEHOUSE (June 29, 2017) — State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) has been appointed by Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) to serve as the Chairman of the Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services, and the Compliance Advisory Panel during the summer and fall months to help prepare for the 2018 session of the General Assembly. He has also been appointed to serve on the following study committees and authority:

  • Interim Study Committee on Environmental Affairs
  • Transborder Water Resources Authority
  • Medicaid Advisory Committee

“In the Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services, we will be taking an in-depth look into changes needed in state law and policy to respond to changes in federal law on health care, along with other important health issues,” Charbonneau said. “I’m also looking forward to serving on the newly created Transborder Water Resources Authority and the Study Committee on Environmental affairs, which will both focus on developing a long-term approach to maintaining clean and safe drinking water for all Hoosiers.”

The Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Human Services has been assigned to study several topics including:

  • Shortage of health care providers in Indiana;
  • Goals, benchmarks, and plans to reduce the incidence of diabetes in Indiana, improving diabetes care, and controlling complications associated with diabetes;
  • Improvements to the INSPECT program; and
  • Changes needed in state law and policy to respond to changes in federal law on health care.

The Interim Study Committee on Environmental Affairs has been assigned to study several topics including:

  • Public water supply protection, including issues related to lead removal; and
  • How adequate and affordable water utility service can be provided in areas of Indiana in which water utility service is inadequate or costly.

When Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session, lawmakers serve on interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General are assigned to Assembly during the prior legislative session.

Study committee topics are assigned by the bipartisan Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the Senate and eight from the House of Representatives.
