Sen. Jim Smith Announces He Won’t Seek Re-election in 2018

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 12, 2017) – State Sen. Jim Smith (R-Charlestown) made the following statement today, announcing he will not seek re-election after his term expires next year:

“I’ve been fortunate to serve the constituents of Clark, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Scott, Switzerland and Washington counties since 2010,” Smith said. “While serving in the Senate, I have had many meaningful experiences and worked on a variety of issues to make Indiana A State That Works. It has been an honor to represent the great people of Southern Indiana, and I am grateful to them for the opportunity to serve in the legislature.”

Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) commended Smith’s service to Indiana.

“Jim has been a strong advocate of limited government principles, and those ideals and values guided him well while representing Senate District 45,” Long said. “I thank him for his service to our state and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Background

Smith has represented Senate District 45 since 2010. The district currently encompasses parts of Clark and Jackson counties and all of Jefferson, Scott and Switzerland counties. It previously included portions of Jennings and Washington counties.

Smith serves on the Senate committees on Local Government, as a ranking member; Pensions and Labor; and Tax and Fiscal Policy.

During his tenure in the General Assembly, Smith authored legislation to phase out the state’s inheritance tax. He also sponsored legislation in 2014 to provide financial support for apprenticeship and training programs jointly created by schools and local employers.

Smith will serve the remainder of his term, which expires in November 2018.
