Sen. Alting receives Champion of Economic Opportunity Award

STATEHOUSE (July 24, 2025)State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) was presented with the Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute's Champion of Economic Opportunity Award today in French Lick.

The award serves as the organization's legislator of the year award and is given to legislators who speak up and work for Hoosiers in need.

"I have always been an advocate for the less fortunate," Alting said. "Hoosiers struggling to make ends meet are often forgotten at the Statehouse and I work hard to be their voice on important legislative efforts. Many of the causes of homelessness include mental health and addiction, and many of the homeless are veterans who defended this country and I am obligated to make sure I'm defending them."

Throughout his time in the Senate, Alting has worked with several Lafayette-area organizations that assist homeless individuals like the Lafayette Transitional Housing Center and Homestead Resources.

"Sen. Alting has been an advocate for unhoused Hoosiers for his entire career," LTHC President and CEO Jennifer Layton said. "His leadership during the last session was instrumental in ensuring that every person deserves compassion and support, not handcuffs. His action gave me hope that there are still people who understand that housing is a basic and fundamental human need."

"Sen. Alting understands the needs of the families we serve, and he is always willing to bring their concerns to his colleagues at the state level," Homestead Resources Executive Director Marie Morse said. "As the Executive Director of Homestead Resources, I appreciate so much that I have a senator that I can always count on to hear my thoughts and act when needed. He is a great statesman. We are proud that he serves our community so well."

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Policy, Alting worked on several bills this session that helped strengthen charitable organizations in Indiana.

As a legislator, Alting has received multiple honors during his tenure including three American Legion Distinguished Public Service Awards, the Outstanding Public Service Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Champion Award and Mental Health America-Wabash Valley Region's Mental Health Advocacy Award.

"While it's nice to receive a recognition like this, my top priority as a state senator is to be a voice for my neighbors, family and friends in Indianapolis," Alting said. "I appreciate the Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute for recognizing me and thank them for all the hard work they do to protect less fortunate Hoosiers."

Alting encourages residents of Senate District 22 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Alting can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Alting or by phone at 800-382-9467.
