Schmitt's election bill heads to governor's desk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 25, 2026) — A bill authored by State Sen. Daryl Schmitt (R-Jasper) that would increase the amount of time election materials are preserved in county election offices unanimously passed the Senate today and will now move to the governor for his consideration.

Senate Enrolled Act 113 would require election offices to preserve election materials for 34 months instead of 22 months required under current law.

"Preserving election materials longer ensures Indiana's elections are more transparent," Schmitt said. "Senate Enrolled Act 113 would protect our process and ensure ballots are correctly counted and voters are properly registered."

The bill would also require election results to be published online through the Indiana Secretary of State's Election Division website.

SEA 113 now heads to the governor's desk for further consideration.

Schmitt also encourages constituents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Schmitt can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Schmitt or by phone at 800-382-9467.
