STATEHOUSE (July 8, 2025) — A new law sponsored by State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) establishing an updated methodology for annually assessing school performance was ceremonially signed into law by Gov. Mike Braun today.
House Enrolled Act 1498 requires the State Board of Education to create a new A-F grading scale for schools across Indiana based on factors such as ILEARN pass rates, IREAD-3 pass rates and students graduating with diploma seals. The law also empowers the Board to include other measurements it deems relevant and could include adjustments for the growth and uniqueness of individual students.
"Parents have a right to make informed decisions about their child's education, and schools get better when they operate with accountability and transparency," Deery said. "Indiana needs an easy-to-understand grading system to make both goals possible. This new law builds on the previous accountability system in a way that will improve educational outcomes for Hoosiers across the state."
The Indiana State Board of Education is currently reviewing options for the future grading scale and a first draft was recently released. The law applies to both public and accredited private schools.
