Our great nation is built on the bravery and sacrifice made by generations of troops who have protected us. We literally have no idea what our nation would look like today if it weren’t for the great conviction of men and women across our history, from the first shots of the American Revolution to the present day.
That is why, every year on Veterans Day, we honor those who served and remember those who lost their lives protecting others. As a veteran myself, I know how important it is to not only remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, but also to ensure those who returned home are recognized for their service.
The state of Indiana has made many resources and benefits available to support our veterans in honor of their service.
Hoosier veterans receive tax relief, including income tax deductions for active, reserve and National Guard members, as well as tax exemption from military retirement pay. We also provide property tax deductions for partially disabled veterans.
It is also important to give veterans opportunities to further their education and career after their service. That is why Hoosier veterans, their spouses and dependents, and veterans residing in states bordering Indiana, are eligible for in-state tuition. Veterans can also be exempt from certain professional licensing requirements if they received relevant training as part of their military service.
The General Assembly also continues to find ways to help members of our nation's military.
This session, I sponsored House Enrolled Act 1111, which improves benefits and protections for members of the Indiana National Guard. I also co-authored Senate Enrolled Act 15 in 2024, which requires the Indiana Department of Labor to work with the Indiana Department of Veteran’s Affairs to create and distribute posters detailing available veteran benefits and services to employers.
Our veterans fought to protect us. For their bravery supporting our nation, it is only right that we support them.
