Each Fourth of July, we celebrate just how great it is to live in the United States of America. Families and friends come together to have cookouts, fireworks shows and pool parties all to celebrate the day our nation declared its independence from Great Britain in 1776.
But the freedom we enjoy in our great nation did not come free. We must remember the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect this nation, and we must offer them our gratitude and support.
As a veteran myself, I understand the importance of helping the members of our nation's military in any way we can, and I strive to make Indiana the best state possible for veterans. To achieve this goal, I have worked on several pieces of legislation in the last few years to support our veterans.
This session, I sponsored House Enrolled Act 1111 which improves benefits and protections for members of the Indiana National Guard, including expanding workers compensation eligibility, more medical insurance options and better benefits for families in case of death in the line of duty.
To help veterans better navigate all of Indiana's veteran resources, I also co-authored Senate Enrolled Act 15 in 2024, which requires the Indiana Department of Labor to work with the Indiana Department of Veteran’s Affairs to create and distribute posters detailing available veteran benefits and services to employers. That year, I also supported Senate Enrolled Act 49, which allows disabled veterans to hunt on the same free hunting days as youth hunters.
As we celebrate another Independence Day, it is important to remember that our great nation is built upon the sacrifices of the men and women in our armed forces. Our veterans have kept this country free and secure, and it's the least we can do to give them the support they deserve.
