The United States was built on the principles of uniting as one to meet the needs of the people and create a country where everyone's voice is heard.
I constantly strive to follow these principles serving in the Indiana General Assembly representing my district. We have vigorous debate daily during Indiana’s legislative sessions, and we either pass, modify then pass, or defeat initiatives.
One may look at this as winning or losing. However, I choose to view this as learning, potentially changing initiatives to collectively provide the best opportunity and freedom for every Hoosier and creating a landscape for personal growth and prosperity. It exemplifies freedom and opportunity for all to be heard through our representative government.
Recently though, our nation feels more divided than ever.
On Sept. 10, Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated during a college event at Utah Valley University.
In June, former Minnesota Speaker of the House of Representatives, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, were killed in their home. There have also been school shootings at Evergreen High School in Colorado and Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
I see no room for political violence in our country whatsoever. With seemingly two political parties, when one is in charge, the other is not happy and vice versa. This does not make violence okay – we are all Americans. Our political opinions may differ, but we can learn from one another, or at a minimum, practice the virtue of patience.
We should welcome healthy debate on our differences of opinions, come to agreement, or leave the remaining issues for another time. We can also remember it’s okay to agree to disagree.
Constituents can reach out to me with any questions or concerns they may have by filling out a "Contact Me" form on the IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Raatz website or by calling my office at 800-382-9467.
