As we approach Memorial Day weekend, it is important to remember that Memorial Day is not just a day off work to have cookouts and picnics. It is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who served our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
As an U.S. Army veteran, it is one of my top priorities to ensure our veterans, active-duty personnel and their families are taken care of.
In recent years, I have authored and supported several measures to assist our veterans and active-duty personnel.
This year, I supported House Enrolled Act 1210, which ends homestead property taxes for totally disabled veterans and their surviving spouses. This legislation is designed to put more money back in the pockets of these brave men and women so they can better support their families.
Last session, I sponsored House Enrolled Act 1111, which improves benefits and protections for members of the Indiana National Guard, including expanding workers compensation eligibility, more medical insurance options and better benefits for families in case of death in the line of duty.
Lastly, in 2024 I also co-authored Senate Enrolled Act 15, which requires the Indiana Department of Labor to work with the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs to create and distribute posters detailing available veteran benefits and services to employers.
As we spend time with our families on this Memorial Day, take some time to think about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy days like this in our great country.
