Raatz Roundup: Against All Odds

By State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond)

It's hard to believe that 250 years ago, the founders of our nation got together and signed the Declaration of Independence, putting us on the path of freedom and independence from Great Britain.

In those early days, there was no guarantee that the constitutional republic the Founding Fathers created would be able to stand the test of time, let alone the Revolutionary War.

Yet, the United States survived. We survived early challenges in deciding how our government would work, a civil war and periods of economic hardship. Through all these challenges, we emerged to be the strongest nation on Earth and a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world

Our nation has stood the test of time because of the people within it. The American people play an active role in our government and ensure their voices are heard. Our country is also full of veterans and active-duty soldiers who put their lives on the line to ensure we remain the free country our Founding Fathers intended.

As you celebrate America's birthday, take a moment to reflect on everything our nation has overcome and grown stronger from to get to this semiquincentennial milestone.

We truly are blessed to live in the greatest nation on Earth. Here's to 250 more!
