Parents know their kids better than anyone else, and when it comes to schools, they should have the ultimate say in where their child is educated, whether it's at a public school, private school or at home.
That is why Senate Republicans have worked diligently to ensure Indiana is one of the leading states in the country for school choice. Our state's three most recent budgets have made the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program increasingly more accessible to Hoosier families.
This school year is the first year under the expanded universal school choice program, which now allows all families to apply to use funds for private school tuition fees if they so choose. With all income caps removed, every student is now eligible to apply.
Any parent who is interested in applying for a universal school voucher to help with tuition payments at private schools should contact the school and will need to provide proof of residency like a driver's license and other documents confirming the number of dependents they have. The school will then fill out the application and submit it to the state for approval. The school will notify the parents on whether they were approved.
It's efforts like these that led the Cato Institute to ranking Indiana No. 5 in the country for educational freedom.
As we approach the start of session, Senate Republicans will continue to support parents’ rights and pursue policies that ensure all families can thrive.
