Indiana Native Wins Olympic Silver Medal

Friday, March 9, 2018

When you think about where an Olympic skier grew up, images of snow covered mountains in Colorado or Utah come to mind, but that is not the case for Olympian Nick Goepper. Goepper is a native of Lawrenceburg, where the highest point is only 479 feet. Despite this, Lawrenceburg is home to one of the few ski and snowboard areas in the state.

Growing up, he spent up to 12 hours a day training at Perfect North. By the age of 15, he had a full ride scholarship to Windells Action Sports Academy in Oregon where he began training with professional skiers. His success at the academy and at the 2013 Dew Tour allowed him to qualify for his first Olympic Games at Sochi in 2014, where he won a bronze medal. After qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he even had time to give a shout-out to Lawrenceburg and Perfect North. Click here for video.

At just 23 years old, Goepper already has an impressive résumé. He is a two-time Olympic medalist, a five-time Winter X Games medalist and a one-time FIS Freestyle World Ski Championship medalist. He most recently won a silver medal in the Slopestyle Free Ski event at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

This year he is the only Hoosier representing the United States at the Winter Olympics. Goepper’s success gives Hoosiers a lot to be proud of and will hopefully inspire a new generation of skiers in Indiana.
