Messmer Report: Thank You, Southwest Indiana

Thank You, Southwest Indiana

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

I have always taken my role in representing portions of Southwest Indiana over the last 16 years, initially in the Indiana House of Representatives and more recently in the State Senate, very seriously.

This year, as most of you know, I have taken the opportunity to pursue the open seat in Indiana's eighth congressional district.

I recently announced my resignation from the Senate effective Sept. 3 to dedicate the time I have left prior to the election this fall to that pursuit.

During my time in the General Assembly, I worked on laws that support local businesses, protect children and ensure immigration laws are enforced in Indiana.

On Sept. 4, there will be a caucus to select my replacement who will complete the last two years of my current Senate term. I look forward to supporting that person and helping them get up to speed on issues they will face this coming legislative session.

Serving my neighbors and fellow Hoosiers has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I am grateful you have entrusted me in representing you over the years.

I know many of you have tuned in weekly to read or listen to my Messmer Report. This has been a great way to keep you all informed on laws the legislature has worked on and other things happening within state government and our communities.

If I am successful in November, I look forward to the opportunity to bring back the Messmer Report next year, with news and information from Washington, D.C.

But for now, this will be my final column until that time.

As we wait for my successor to be appointed and sworn in, the Senate District 48 legislative office will continue to operate at the Statehouse. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the office by email at s48@iga.in.gov or by phone at 800-382-9467.
