MERRITT PRESENTS SAGAMORE OF THE WABASH AWARD: State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis, right) presents John D. Proffitt (left) with Indiana’s highest citizen award, the Sagamore of the Wabash. Proffitt, now retired, was the managing partner for over 30 years at Campbell Kyle Proffitt LLP. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Hoosier award from former Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Proffitt is described as a leader among lawyers in Indiana, especially in the areas of family law and civil litigation. For over 20 years, he has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America Publication and has been listed in Indianapolis Monthly Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Indiana each year since inception.

Always giving back to the community through personal involvement, Proffitt is very active in local politics, and was instrumental in establishing the Hamilton County Progress Committee, which served for years as a county think tank, fostering collaboration and endorsing regional thinking.

Dating back to the 1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash award was created by former Gov. Ralph Gates. It is the highest honor the governor can bestow, and is only presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state.
