Donato, Manning, Snow, Karickhoff: Local farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2023) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Stacey Donato (R-Logansport), State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Logansport), State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) and State Rep. Craig Snow (R-Warsaw), three locally owned farms were honored at the Statehouse:

  • The Berlet farm in Cass County received a Centennial Award;
  • The McQuiston-Howell farm in Howard County received a Centennial Award; and
  • McSherry Farms, Inc. in Kosciusko County received a Sesquicentennial Award.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program recognizes the impact these family farms have made on the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana. In the past 47 years, more than 5,800 farms have received the honor.

"Farming and agriculture are essential to our state and local communities," Donato said. "It is always wonderful to see these long-standing farms receive the recognition they so deserve, and I look forward to watching what they achieve in years to come."

"Indiana is blessed to have so many farm families who continue to pass down their skills and passion to the next generation," Manning said. "For them to operate for more than a century is an incredible accomplishment, and I congratulate them on reaching this milestone."

"Operating a farm spanning multiple generations and for more than 100 years is a tremendous accomplishment," Karickhoff said. "Indiana has a rich agricultural history, and I look forward to seeing these families continue their success."

"Maintaining and running farms takes a tremendous amount of dedication," Snow said. "These families work long days and nights to make a living, and it's great to see their efforts being recognized."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are Centennial, Sesquicentennial and Bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
