#INtheKnow: Combating the Opioid Epidemic

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

During the 2017 session, lawmakers passed several bills aimed at tackling this issue including Senate Enrolled Act 226, which limits the amount of opioids that can be prescribed to a patient.

Reducing the amount of opioids prescribed will make it less likely for patients to become addicted and reduce the supply of leftover prescription pills that too often wind up in the hands of drug abusers.

SEA 226 includes exceptions to the limits so that patients with a legitimate, pressing need for larger prescriptions won’t be blocked from getting an appropriate amount of medicine.

The law goes into effect July 1.
