Indiana State Parks hosting First Day Hikes

Wednesday, December 27, 2023

With more than 30 properties throughout Indiana, Hoosiers are within a one-hour drive from a state park or state recreation area.

While many may think about spending time at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) properties during the warmer months, there is plenty to do during the colder season as well.

On Jan. 1, the DNR will host its annual First Day Hikes at properties throughout the state.

First Day Hikes give Hoosiers a chance to start the year off with some exercise while enjoying some of Indiana's most beautiful landscapes.

From the shores of Lake Michigan to the banks of the Ohio River, there will be plenty of opportunities for hikers of all abilities to enjoy a hike outdoors on New Years Day.

With more than 700 miles of trails within state parks, and hundreds of miles of additional trails throughout Indiana, Hoosiers of all ages can enjoy a wide range of trails.

Recently, the DNR announced 14 communities will receive a combined $31.2 million in funding to add 28 more miles of trails through the Next Level Trails program.
