Improving Indiana's mental health care infrastructure

Improving Indiana's mental health care infrastructure

Monday, February 20, 2023

Mental health is an issue affecting many individuals, families and communities, and Senate Republicans understand it is imperative for Hoosiers suffering from mental illness to know they have a safe place to go and someone to call and respond.

According to the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, approximately 22% of Hoosiers experience mental illness each year, and half with serious mental illness go untreated.

Following the implementation of the 9-8-8 National Suicide and Crisis Line last year, Senate Bill 1 would improve mental health care access by building out a system of certified behavioral health clinics in Indiana, establishing the next step for improving our mental health care system.

Funding allocated to support initiatives outlined in this bill will be included in budget discussions.

SB 1 unanimously passed the Senate and will now move to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration.
