Honoring Indiana law enforcement members

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 26, 2024) — Today, the Senate unanimously passed two house concurrent resolutions sponsored by State Sen. Aaron Freeman (R-Indianapolis) to honor fallen members of the Indiana law enforcement community.

House Concurrent Resolution 2 will encourage the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to rename the mile stretch of I-74 southeast of the Acton Road exit the "Deputy John Durm Memorial Mile."

John Durm was a decorated Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy who served Indiana for 38 years. As well as an officer, he was a dedicated father and husband. Deputy Durm tragically lost his life in the line of duty last July during a prisoner transportation. He was awarded the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart.

House Concurrent Resolution 4 will encourage INDOT to rename the portion of U.S. Highway 52 between Davis Road and German Church Road the "Officer Breann Leath Memorial Mile."

Before serving the Indiana Metropolitan Police Department, Officer Breann Leath served as a member of the Indiana National Guard and with the Indiana Department of Corrections. Officer Leath was killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance in April 2020. She was described by fellow officers as being dedicated, compassionate and a true example of an IMPD officer.

"I am proud to sponsor these concurrent resolutions to ensure that the memory and legacy of these dedicated public servants live on," Freeman said. "To serve is to put one's life on the line every day to ensure the safety of the community. Deputy Durm and Officer Leath were beloved public servants and are prime examples of service and humility. I admire their selflessness and dedication and mourn the tragedy of their loss."
