STATEHOUSE (April 8, 2026) — State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle), chair of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy, is calling on Gov. Mike Braun to temporarily suspend the state's tax on gas to provide relief for Hoosiers. Nine other Senate Republicans are also throwing their support behind the effort, citing the need for relief for Hoosiers.
"Despite everything we have done at the Statehouse to maintain our state's low cost of living, the current price of gas is adding too much pressure on Hoosiers and their wallets," Holdman said. "Today, along with some of my colleagues, I am calling on Gov. Braun to provide relief at the pump for Hoosiers by using his legal authority to suspend the state's tax on gas."
According to IC 10-14-3-13, the governor has the ability to take emergency actions like suspending certain taxes on gas if he determines there's been a gas shortfall that justifies declaring an energy emergency.
"Suspending the state tax on gas is a practical, concrete step we can take to save Hoosiers money. Thanks to Indiana's ongoing fiscal discipline, we have the ability to provide this relief for Hoosiers, and therefore we should do it."
As the chair of the Senate's Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee, Holdman has authored and sponsored some of the state's landmark tax cut legislation, including a law that is projected to save Hoosiers $2 billion in income taxes over the first five years, a law providing $1.3 billion in property tax cuts, and a law to provide more than $200 million in state and local tax cuts by suspending income tax on tips, overtime and interest on American-made cars for 2026.
Holdman is joined in calling upon the governor to temporarily suspend the tax on gas by State Sens. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette), Jim Buck (R-Kokomo), Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette), Dan Dernulc (R-Highland), Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute), Randy Maxwell (R-Guilford), Rick Niemeyer (R-Lowell), Linda Rogers (R-Granger) and Greg Walker (R-Columbus).
