Helping Hoosiers Prepare for the Winter

Tuesday, November 25, 2025

As temperatures start to drop with winter right around the corner, Hoosiers should begin preparing now for the challenges cold weather can bring. Indiana often experiences snow, freezing rain, wind chills, frost warnings and other sudden temperature changes throughout the winter season, which is why early preparation is key to staying safe.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security offers several helpful tips and resources to ensure Hoosiers across the state are ready for winter.

Preparedness Tips

  • Have a home disaster kit ready in case of power outages that can last multiple days or if road conditions prevent you from getting everyday supplies.
  • Prepare for travel emergencies by having a vehicle emergency kit ready.
  • Wear warm clothing to limit your exposure to wind and cold temperatures. Use a hat, coat, gloves, pants, socks and closed shoes.
  • Before traveling, check the county travel status map for advisories, watches and warnings. Also stay informed on weather service forecasts and traffic conditions.
  • When driving, slow down and leave plenty of distance between yourself and other vehicles. You need extra time to react and avoid an accident.
  • Avoid using alternative-heating sources such as space heaters and fireplaces, but practice proper safety precautions if you do. Never use home appliances, such as ovens, to stay warm.

Winter safety takes planning. Whether you're staying in, heading out for a quick trip or traveling across the state, it's always important to have a plan in place in case of an emergency, and IDHS has the tools to support Hoosiers as they prepare for the cold months ahead.
