Harvest and Hunting Seasons in Indiana

Harvest and Hunting Seasons in Indiana

Thursday, October 3, 2024

Fall is upon us, which means Indiana's harvest and hunting seasons are underway. It's important for Hoosiers to remember the many safety tips and regulations they should follow this time of year.

With harvest season in full swing, Hoosier motorists will likely find more large, slow-moving farm equipment on Indiana's rural roads and highways. These vehicles are typically wide, sometimes taking up a majority of the road, and travel at speeds no greater than 25 mph.

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture has provided a list of safety tips Hoosier motorists should follow when approaching large farm equipment.

  • Farmers will pull over for motorists when they are able to, but it may take time for them to find a safe place to do so.
  • Be patient and do not pass within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, elevation structure or tunnel.
  • Avoid tailgating and watch for sudden stops.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

It is also hunting season, which means Hoosier hunters should be up to date on the rules and regulations put in place by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

An overview of these regulations can be found in the 2024-25 Hunting and Trapping Guide, which is available at DNR Fish and Wildlife Areas, local license retailers and online.

Hunters should ensure they have a valid hunting license issued by the DNR to hunt on both public and private land, as well as being aware of the legal hunting hours which depend on the type of game being hunted.
