Goode: Vigo County selected for public defender pilot program

STATEHOUSE (June 20, 2025) — Vigo County has been selected by the Indiana Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys as one of 12 counties to participate in a pilot program that will allow its criminal justice system to provide support services for individuals charged with a misdemeanor, State Sen. Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute) said.

Established by Senate Enrolled Act 179 during the 2024 legislative session, the pilot program may reimburse participating counties for 40% of defense services for misdemeanors in a superior or circuit court.

"Often times, misdemeanor charges are brought against individuals suffering from mental illness or substance abuse," Goode said. "This extra funding will give Vigo County more options to provide pragmatic support for those who truly need the help."

The reimbursement program will allow for additional staffing to assist the Vigo County Public Defender Office, especially as misdemeanor cases are transferred from Terre Haute City Court to the Vigo County Superior Courts.

"I would like to thank the Indiana Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys for selecting Vigo County as one of the 12 participating counties in this pilot program," Goode said. "I also appreciate Gretchen Etling for her diligent work in making the case for Vigo County for this funding. I believe this program and its funding will help ensure those needing mental health and substance abuse treatment will get the services they need to help improve their lives."

Goode encourages residents of Senate District 38 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Goode can be reached by filling out a "Contact Me" form online at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/Goode or by phone at 800-382-9467.
